About me

I’ve been designing websites since the early 2000’s when it was only just becoming commonplace to have one and people used to think that having a visitor counter was cool! 

The first one was for On Your Travels – a travel agency in Letchworth Garden City – and I am still involved to this day, but I’ve also worked on many other sites including some where I’ve been one of a larger team.

Initially I coded in raw html and css, the obvious problem being that if you needed to make a change to something like the footer, you had to make it on all pages which was very time consuming! Now of course there are numerous tools to help.

Drupal is a content management system which is perfect if you have lots of different content that you want displayed. 

And that is exactly how I built the On Your Travels site as there is lots of different content that needs to be displayed in different ways.

This site though is built with WordPress as it’s much smaller and simpler with just a few pages of content.

WordPress is the most popular web development tool, and is great for small sites like this one especially if you like to drag and drop elements into place with little or no coding.

For me, it’s always been vital to make sure your site looks good on mobile devices because now that’s where the majority of traffic comes from, and when I’ve looked at the figures for my sites it is often the vast majority are from mobile visits!

Other design essentials include things like your contact details being easy to find, plus information about when you are open etc – there’s nothing worse than not being able to find something that should be easy to find!
